The installation Pinned Transitory II was developed in 2014 and is made of steel, tensile materials, rope, cord and tent pegs. The artwork investigates and questions ideas of permanence. The bird motif becomes a metaphor of a fluid African identity and refers to the adapter, traveller or nomad.
Renamed Pinned in Transition, the installation has been altered specifically for the South African Pavilion at La Biennale di Venezia. Newly reshaped – only the original armature remains, which works like an architectural web – emphasises the crisscrossing and coming together of people and thoughts. Now composed almost entirely of air, the work lightly bodies forth the literal and virtual crossroad/s at which people find themselves when interacting within new parameters.
The work’s initial visualisation of nomadic movement and impermanence, has been enriched by being deconstructed, remodeled, moved to a different, foreign location, which will result in a new layering of meaning unknown even to the artist herself.
